12mo, ff. ‘A’, ‘B’, L (i.e. 1–50); engraved throughout; marginal wormtrack to initial leaves not affecting plates, a few minor marginal tears and losses, longer tear without loss to f. V, f. XXII bound upside-down, ff. XLIII and L shaved at foot (the latter trimming an imprint), minor stains, else a good copy; stab-stitched and laced into contemporary French vellum with 2 vellum tackets; a little stained and cockled; early pen trial to rear pastedown, modern ink stamp of the Jesuits of Toulouse to title verso.
An exceptionally rare French pocket edition of Vignola’s classic treatise on the five orders of classical architecture, entirely engraved on fifty-two plates by Antoine Humblot (d. 1758) and published by the same. Humblot was one of the artists involved in Charpentier’s 1757 folio edition, ‘one of the most curious and aesthetically appealing editions of Vignola ever published’ (RIBA).
No complete copies traced: OCLC finds only one substantial fragment, of fifty leaves, at the Plantin–Moretus Museum; a two-leaf fragment, likely the preliminaries, is held by the Hertziana. Not in CCfr, Library Hub, or KVK.
